This is our first episode on the topic of digital land investing. Derek interviews WeMeta CEO/Founder Winston Robson to get an introduction to digital land and how it differs from physical land. They go over use cases, restrictions, future potential and challenges for digital real estate. It's super early in the space, but there are a lot of people betting on the future of land in the metaverse. Derek and Johnny end the episode with their takeaways on digital land and potential use cases of the metaverse.

Winston Robson is a data scientist and CoFounder at WeMeta. Inspired by the open source capabilities within the MetaVerse, Winston launched the company in May of 2021. Originally from Los Angeles, Winston combined his knowledge of the real estate market and engineering capabilities to create the world’s most thorough MetaVerse real estate analytics platform: WeMeta. The company helps investors source through available MetaVerse properties and make sound investments.

A book mentioned many times over on ILAB throughout the years is "Adventure Capitalist" and we were finally able to speak to author Jim Rogers on this episode! Sam and Derek kick off the show both talking about the influence of the book and then jump into the interview. Sam interviews Jim where he touches on his experiences visiting nearly every country in the world, even ones at war during the time. Jim then speaks of his views on the current state of the economy, what markets you should be looking to invest in, the importance of history to the economy, and where he plans on traveling to next. Sam and Derek wrap up the show with travel experiences of their own and what they think about Jim's thoughts on the future, especially with regards to China.

Jim Rogers, a native of Demopolis, Alabama, is an author, financial commentator, adventurer, and successful international investor.  He has been frequently featured in Time, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Barron’s, Forbes, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, The Business Times, The Straits Times and many media outlets worldwide.  He has also appeared as a regular commentator and columnist in various media and has been a professor at Columbia University.

After attending Yale and Oxford University, Rogers co-founded the Quantum Fund, a global-investment partnership.  During the next 10 years, the portfolio gained 4200%, while the S&P rose less than 50%.  Rogers then decided to retire – at age 37.  Continuing to manage his own portfolio, Rogers kept busy serving as a full professor of finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, and, in 1989 and 1990, as the moderator of WCBS's 'The Dreyfus Roundtable' and FNN's 'The Profit Motive with Jim Rogers'.

In 1990-1992, Rogers fulfilled his lifelong dream: motorcycling 100,000 miles across six continents, a feat that landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records.  As a private investor, he constantly analyzed the countries through which he traveled for investment ideas.  He chronicled his one-of-a-kind journey in Investment Biker: On the Road with Jim Rogers.  Jim also embarked on a Millennium Adventure in 1999.  He traveled for 3 years on his round-the-world, Guinness World Record journey. It was his 3rd Guinness Record.  Passing through 116 countries, he covered more than 245,000 kilometers, which he recounted in his book Adventure Capitalist: The Ultimate Road Trip.  His book, Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably In The World's Best Market, was published in 2004.  Another of his books A Bull in China describes his experiences in China as well as the changes and opportunities there. His recent book A Gift to My Children is a heartfelt, indispensable guide for his daughters (as well as for all adults and children) to find success and happiness. His latest memoir Street Smarts: Adventures on the Road and in the Markets was published in February 2013. Recently in January 2018, his book A Gift to My Children, 2nd edition which was published in Chinese, was launched in China. And in October 2018, another of his book The Next Big Wave, published in Complex Chinese, was launched in Taiwan. Rogers had two number one bestsellers in Japan namely The Future of Japan and A Warning to Japan that were published in January and July 2019 respectively.

This episode kicks off with Johnny telling of the journey to make it out of Ukraine safely. This sparked a conversation on the importance of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in times of war and failing fiat currencies. Then the show jumps to longtime ILAB listener and tax professional Chris Kotarba (Chris K) who explains ways, for U.S. citizens in particular, to hack the system and legally save on taxes. Legislation rules in place for other investments do not necessarily apply to crypto, so he explains how you can potentially save a lot on your taxes if you are holding crypto. Then Sam and Johnny circle back to share thoughts on the complicated tax situation around crypto and tease an upcoming 101 episode on more broader tax hacks.

Chris Kotarba (“Chris K”) is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Taxand, LLC in San Jose. He specializes in international tax and his primary areas of concentration are planning, structuring, and transfer pricing, both outbound and inbound, for multinational companies of all sizes. Mr. Kotarba has worked with clients across various industries, including retail, technology (both software and hardware), pharma, medical devices, and financial services. He has specialized expertise in transactions involving cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and other digital assets, including ICOs, forks and token swaps.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Kotarba spent eight years as an attorney with DLA Piper in Palo Alto. He led more than a dozen global expansions and other corporate restructuring projects, developed a focus for US companies with Asian operations and closed a high-profile joint venture in China. Mr. Kotarba also helped companies onshore their IP to the US, both permanently and temporarily. He was briefly seconded to DLA Piper’s Hong Kong office, where he worked with Asian companies expanding to the US.

Mr. Kotarba earned a JD from Columbia Law School and a LLM in taxation from NYU School of Law. He is admitted to practice law in California, New York, and Massachusetts. Mr. Kotarba is the current President of the San Francisco Foreign Tax Club.
